Foreigners visit Bulgaria for its excellent healthcare!

Interview with Gunnar from Iceland a photo of Gunnar

Why did you decide to come to Bulgaria?

To be honest there is only one reason why I set off to Bulgaria – to have my teeth fixed.

Why did you prefer Bulgarian dental care instead of the one in your country?

A friend of mine who lives in Bulgaria and had previous experience with Bulgarian dental care said that he can guarantee the competence of his dentist. Bulgarian dentists are known for their excellent work and you don’t need to be in Western Europe to know that 2+2 makes 4. Besides, it’s a lot cheaper.

If it’s not a secret, how much did you save exactly?

I had a very serious operation, and it cost me about a third of what it would if I had it done in Iceland. I saved about 8-9000 Euro.

Are you satisfied with the result?

Very much. I like the way Bulgarian professionals are working. I don’t think that any dentist in Iceland would call me the following day in his own free time to ask me how I feel. I would recommend Bulgarian dentists to all my friends without hesitation.

Where did you stay?

I rented two rooms with a beautiful garden in the center of Karlovo – the perfect accommodation. It is very important to have a contact or a friend in the country, who can assist you to find a cheap and comfortable place to stay.

What is your opinion of Bulgaria?

People here are not very different from those in Iceland. I have never been bothered in any way. People are very open when you get to know them, otherwise they are discreet and correct. The language is the only problem that I had, because it’s completely different from Icelandic, but many people here speak English, so you can still communicate easily. I made many friends here, very quickly.

The climate is absolutely beautiful. This is the best climate, from all the places where I have been abroad, and I am used to very good climates.

Did you do any sightseeing?

The main purpose of my visit was the dental operation. So far I have visited only Karlovo and Sofia, but I have passed by some really beautiful places, and I intend to visit Hissar and many other places before I go back to Iceland.

Can you share an interesting story, or something curious you learned from your stay in Bulgaria?

I figured the people here must be generally very optimistic. I saw someone has built a motel near the road from Sofia, next to a petrol station with no towns and villages nearby. If this person expects to have many clients he must be very optimistic.

I didn’t know this region was called the Rose Valley when I came here, but now I understand why (pointing to a large blossoming rose bush in the garden). Everything grows here. You spit on the ground, and a tree grows. I watch the branches of the grapevine grow longer every single day. I know I have to go soon, but I can’t, because I have to see how my flowers will blossom.

I also find Bulgarian Rakia (a national alcoholic drink) really fascinating. The food is very good too.

What do you think about the town of Karlovo?

If this town was in Iceland, all the buses would go there. When you come here you have the longing for your friends to come and share the experience with you. You just want to say to them: “Look, look how beautiful it is!”

Will you visit the country again?

Yes, I am certain of that. I’m even trying to make a deal and buy a small place where I can come with my daughters and my grand children.
